GROWTH THROUGH Counselling
Based in Toowoomba, NexGenCounselling supports individuals and families from across the wider Darling Downs region, including Warwick, Dalby, Goondiwindi, Stanthorpe, and surrounding communities.
Our counselling approach provides a supportive and respectful space where people can talk openly about what they are experiencing, make sense of the challenges they are facing, and develop practical ways forward.
We understand that people often seek counselling when life has become overwhelming, when the same difficulties or patterns seem to keep repeating, or when they know something is not quite right but are unsure why. Counselling can provide an opportunity to slow things down, explore what is happening beneath the surface, and better understand the thoughts, emotions, experiences, relationships, and behavioural patterns that may be influencing everyday life.
At NexGenCounselling, we take a functional, non-pathologising approach. Rather than beginning with the question, “What is wrong with you?”, we are interested in understanding “What has happened, what is this behaviour or response doing for you, and what might it be protecting?”
Through evidence-informed counselling, we work alongside each person to build greater understanding, develop practical strategies, strengthen their capacity to respond differently, and support meaningful and lasting change.
Working to Create Lifelong Change
Counselling
Through consistent and supportive counselling sessions, we work alongside clients to better understand the concerns, experiences, and behavioural patterns that may be affecting their lives.
Our counselling is tailored to each person. We recognise that everyone brings different experiences, relationships, strengths, challenges, and goals to counselling, so sessions are adapted to the individual rather than expecting the individual to fit a particular approach.
Drawing on professional training, experience, and evidence informed counselling approaches, we help clients explore what they are experiencing, develop greater insight into the patterns influencing their thoughts, emotions, relationships, and behaviour, and identify practical ways forward.
Change does not always come from simply knowing what we should do differently. Sometimes it begins by understanding why a particular response developed, what purpose it may have served, and what continues to keep it in place.
Our role is to work collaboratively with clients as they develop new insights, strengthen their own resources, explore different ways of responding, and make changes that are meaningful and sustainable in their everyday lives.

Don Hummons
Founder and Director
Don Hummons is a counsellor with more than 35 years of experience working with human behaviour, behavioural psychology, counselling, learning, and human development. He holds a qualification in counselling, previously practised as a behavioural psychologist in the United States, and is currently completing his Master’s degree in Counselling.
Throughout his career, Don's work has been centred around a practical question:
Why do people continue to behave in ways that may no longer be working for them, even when they understand that something needs to change?
That question has shaped much of his professional journey.
His work draws from counselling, behavioural and cognitive psychology, neuroscience, social psychology, learning theory, and related behavioural sciences to understand not simply what a person does, but why a behaviour may have developed, what function it serves, what it may be protecting, and why it can be so difficult to change.
In 2013, Don founded NexGenLearning with a commitment to translating complex behavioural science into practical, understandable language that could be used by individuals and the professionals who support them.
Today, that work is reflected in the development of CBSN Discovery™, a functional, non-pathologising approach to understanding behavioural patterns. Rather than defining people by labels or focusing only on symptoms, Discovery explores the patterns that can develop as people adapt to experiences, relationships, uncertainty, and the demands of everyday life.
At the centre of Don's work is a simple belief: meaningful change becomes more possible when we move beyond asking “What is wrong?” and begin asking:
“What is this behaviour doing for the person, and what might it be protecting?”

We can empower you to make better choices now and in the future.
